The Vampire Test, John Romulus Brinkley, and a Wadsworth Quote

The Vampire Test

If, after having out with someone, you feel worn out and depleted, that person is a vampire. If, after hanging out with someone you still feel full of energy, that person is not a vampire. Of course, The Vampire Test works on many things in our lives, not just people – you can apply it to jobs, hobbies, places, etc…

Austin Kleon

I often hear the idea that you are the average of your five closest friends. The Vampire Test leads to similar conclusions. You choose who you spend time with. Choose wisely. Spend time with people that enrich you and make you feel good. Don’t waste time with people who aren’t adding to your life.

Once again, I learned this from Austin Kleon’s wonderful short book, Show Your Work!. Seriously, go buy that book. It’s the best bang for your buck (in terms of time) book that you will read this year. I don’t know if that sentence made sense, but it’s true.

Reply All Episode 86 – John Romulus Brinkley

I love Reply All and this week’s episode did not disappoint. It’s about Dr. John Romulus Brinkley. He’s a doctor/con-man/radio host/non-governor from the 30s and 40s. He would take goat testicles and put them into men’s scrotums to solve impotence. That’s not a joke. They called him the “Goat Gland Doctor”. Seriously, listen to this episode. Thank me later.

I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t trust that guy.
