I’m bad at marketing

This is really painful to admit this.

For years, I considered myself an expert marketer.

I got a mobile detailing company off the ground by sheer force of will when I was in college using adwords campaigns.

I have a degree in marketing and I graduated with a 3.75.

But yet – 10 years after working as a software engineer full time – it feels like I lost my touch.

I just took a look at my notes for trying to get Inspiremarks off the ground. My plan is pretty much “send emails to independent bookstores” and “blog about what I’m doing.” And that’s pretty much it.

That’s not marketing, that’s being lazy and hoping you win the lottery.

Marketing, advertising, and creating content is not always fun. It’s not always at the top of the to do list. I inherently enjoy creating products, but it doesn’t matter how great a product is if no one uses it.

I’m vowing to get better at marketing this year. Here’s my challenge: for every hour I spend creating a product, I have to spend that same amount of time marketing it.

Today, I’m bad at marketing.

The hope is that tomorrow I will be a little bit better.
